How to Send Large Video Files via Email

Most videos are too big to attach. Check the file size against your email limit, then send a link from Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail or a transfer service.

Published

To send a large video by email, check its file size first. If it is under your email provider's limit, attach it. If it is over, upload the video and send a download link in the email instead. Most email accounts stop at 20 MB to 25 MB, and many videos are larger than that.

This guide covers the email side: what each email app does when a video is too big, and what to do about it. For the other ways to send a video, such as compressing it, see how to send large video files. For limits across every email provider, see how to send large files via email.

Check the size before you attach

Find the video in your file manager and read its size. Then compare it with the limit for the account you send from. Email limits count the whole message, so leave some room. Microsoft says its limit includes the size of the attachment and the size of the email.

  • Under your provider's limit: attach it. This is the simplest option and the recipient gets the video in their inbox.
  • Over the limit: send a link. Pick one of the options below.
  • Someone needs to edit the footage: send the original by link. Shrinking the video to fit an attachment throws away quality you cannot recover.

What your email app does with a big video

Third-party details below come from each vendor's own help page and were last checked on October 16, 2026. Vendors change how this works, so confirm on the linked page if it matters.

Where you send fromWhat happens when the video is too bigWhat to know
GmailGmail automatically removes the attachment and adds it as a Google Drive link when the total is over 25 MBGmail checks sharing permissions and may ask you to change them before sending. Details in the Gmail guide.
OutlookOutlook shows an error: the file is bigger than the server allows, and suggests putting it in a shared location and sending a linkOutlook can upload the file to OneDrive and share a link. Details in the Outlook guide.
Apple Mail (iCloud)Mail asks you to send the attachments using Mail Drop when the message is larger than your internet provider's limitUp to 5 GB per message, and recipients have 30 days to download.
Yahoo MailAll attachments together must stay under 25 MBYahoo's size-limit page gives only the 25 MB figure, so upload the video elsewhere and paste the link.
Any email app, with a transfer service such as RoceetYou upload the video outside your email app and paste the linkRoceet Free: 2 GB per transfer. Roceet Ultimate: up to 200 GB per transfer. Works the same in every email app.

How to send a large video by email, step by step

  1. Check the video's file size and compare it with the limit above.
  2. Choose how to send a link. If your email app offers its own (Drive for Gmail, OneDrive for Outlook, Mail Drop for Apple Mail) and the video fits in your storage, use it. Otherwise use a transfer service.
  3. Upload the video. Keep the tab open until the upload finishes. Large videos take as long as your internet upload speed allows.
  4. Copy the link and paste it into your email. Add a short note saying what the video is, roughly how big it is, and how long the link works if it has a time limit.
  5. Check that the recipient can open it. With Drive or OneDrive links, look at the sharing setting. With a password-protected link, send the password in a separate message.

Send a large video by email with Roceet

Roceet sends large files by link, so it works with any email app. Drop your video below, add an optional title and message, enter your email, and confirm the 8-digit code we send you. You get a share link to paste into your email. The person you send it to opens the link and downloads the video. They do not need an account.

What you should know before you send:

  • Free: up to 2 GB per transfer. You choose when your link expires, up to 2 days. Free has no monthly cap on how many transfers you send, but it does have a 2 GB storage balance, and space is returned when the files are deleted.
  • Ultimate: $16.99 per user per month, up to 200 GB per transfer, with links that last up to 30 days. Choose this if your video is larger than 2 GB.
  • Controls: you can protect a transfer with a password and limit how many times it can be downloaded. You choose when the link expires, up to your plan's lifetime, and can extend it any time. Expired links can be restored for 2 days on Free and 7 days on Ultimate.

If the video is under your email limit, attach it. If you send from an iPhone, iPad or Mac and the video is under 5 GB, Mail Drop is already built in. A Roceet link is useful when you send from a different email app, when the video is bigger than your free cloud space, or when you want the link to stop working on its own.

Frequently asked questions

Support
How do I email a video that is too large?
Upload the video and put the download link in your email instead of attaching the file. Gmail does this for you with Google Drive when the attachment is over its limit. Outlook can share a OneDrive link, and Apple Mail offers Mail Drop. Or upload to a transfer service and paste the link.
How big a video can I attach to an email?
Gmail allows 25 MB for personal accounts, Outlook with an internet email account defaults to 20 MB, and Yahoo Mail allows 25 MB in total per message. See the table above for what each app does when the video is over its limit.
Does the person I email need an account to watch the video?
With a Roceet link, no. They open the link and download the file. Only the sender confirms an email address, using an 8-digit code. Drive and OneDrive links depend on their sharing setting, so check it before you send.
How large a video can I send with Roceet?
Roceet Free sends up to 2 GB per transfer. Roceet Ultimate sends up to 200 GB per transfer. Free storage is 2 GB, and space is returned when the files are deleted.
How long does a Roceet link last?
You choose when a link expires, up to your plan's lifetime: 2 days on Free and 30 days on Ultimate. You can extend it any time, and expired links can be restored for 2 days on Free and 7 days on Ultimate. You can also delete a transfer yourself before it expires.
Can I password protect a video I send by email?
Yes. Roceet lets you protect a transfer with a password and limit how many times it can be downloaded. Send the password in a separate message from the link.
Should I compress the video to fit in an email?
Only if the recipient just needs to watch it and quality is not critical. If they will edit or archive the footage, send the original by link. The video guide covers when compressing is the right call.
