How to Send Large Video Files from iPhone (AirDrop, Mail Drop and Links)

Send a big iPhone video with AirDrop to a nearby Apple device, Mail Drop for email up to 5 GB, or a download link for everyone else. Steps and limits from Apple's own pages.

Published

Use AirDrop if the person is standing next to you with an Apple device, and Mail Drop if you want to email the video. Apple says some long videos are too large to send in a standard text message, and names AirDrop, iCloud and Mail Drop as the ways to send them instead. Mail Drop takes attachments up to 5 GB. For a video bigger than that, or for someone who is not on an Apple device, send a download link.

Which method fits your video

  • The other person is nearby and has an iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro: AirDrop. No email, no upload wait.
  • You want to email it and the video is under 5 GB: Mail Drop, straight from the Photos or Mail app.
  • The recipient is far away, uses Android or Windows, or the video is over 5 GB: a download link from a transfer service.
  • Someone will edit the footage: keep the original format when you share, so nothing is converted on the way out.

Four ways to send a large iPhone video

Limits below come from Apple's own support pages and were last checked on October 16, 2026. Apple changes them, so open the linked page if the exact number matters.

How to send a long video with AirDrop

Apple calls AirDrop the simplest way to send a large video to a nearby iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple Vision Pro.

  1. Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices.
  2. If the person is not in your contacts, ask them to go to Settings > General > AirDrop and tap Everyone for 10 Minutes. On a Mac they pick Everyone in AirDrop & Handoff settings.
  3. Open the Photos app, tap the video, then tap the share button.
  4. Keep the original if it will be edited. Tap Options and turn on All Photos Data to send the original format, including metadata, location and any edit history or captions.
  5. Tap AirDrop, then tap the person. They get an alert and have to accept or decline.

How to send a large video with Mail Drop

Mail Drop uploads the video to iCloud and puts a link in your email. Apple's steps from the Photos app are short:

  1. Open the Photos app and tap the video.
  2. Tap the share button, then tap Mail.
  3. Enter the recipient in the To field and add a subject or message if you like.
  4. Tap send.

If you start in the Mail app instead, attach the video with Photo Library. When the file is over the maximum size your email account allows, Mail tells you to follow the onscreen instructions to send it with Mail Drop.

Mail Drop has some limits worth knowing, all from Apple's Mail Drop limits page:

  • A message with its attachments over 5 GB might not go as Mail Drop. Apple suggests splitting the content across several emails or compressing it.
  • An uncompressed folder attached to the message is another reason it might not send.
  • There is a 1 TB Mail Drop storage limit. Each attachment expires after 30 days.
  • Attachments don't count against your iCloud storage.

Share settings that change the file

When you share from Photos, tap Options before you send. Apple lists a file format choice there: Automatic picks the best format for the destination, Current prevents a format conversion, and Most Compatible may convert files to JPEG or MOV. If the video is going to an editor, choose Current. If it only has to play on anything, Most Compatible is the safer pick.

Send a large iPhone video with Roceet

Roceet is a good fit when Mail Drop's 5 GB is not enough, when the person you send to is not on an Apple device, or when you want to protect the link with a password. We haven't verified uploading from a phone browser yet, so a computer is the dependable route: AirDrop the video to a Mac first, then drop it below. Enter your email, confirm the 8-digit code we send you, and paste the share link into any message. The person opens the link and downloads the file without an account.

The limits that apply:

  • Free: up to 2 GB per transfer, with links you can set to last up to 2 days. Free has no monthly cap on how many transfers you send. Storage is a 2 GB balance while a transfer is live, and the space comes back when the files are deleted.
  • Ultimate: $16.99 per user per month, up to 200 GB per transfer, with links of up to 30 days. Choose it when the footage is larger than 2 GB.
  • Controls: add an optional password and a download limit. You choose when the link expires, up to your plan's lifetime, and can extend it any time. Expired links can be restored for 2 days on Free and 7 days on Ultimate.

For one clip going to a friend with an iPhone, AirDrop is faster and costs nothing. For an email to a client who may not use Apple Mail, a link they can open anywhere is the safer choice. Frequently asked questions

Support
How do I send a large video from my iPhone?
If the other person is nearby with an Apple device, use AirDrop from the Photos app. To email it, tap Mail in the share sheet and let Mail Drop handle the size, up to 5 GB. For anything bigger, or for non-Apple recipients, upload the video to a transfer service and send the link.
Why won't my iPhone send a long video in a text?
Apple says some long videos are too large for a standard text message, and that the attachment size limit is determined by your service provider. Use AirDrop, iCloud or Mail Drop instead, or send a link.
How big a video can I send with Mail Drop?
Apple's limit is 5 GB per message, including attachments. Recipients have 30 days to download, and the attachment does not count against your iCloud storage. The recipient's email app may still have a smaller size limit.
Does AirDrop work with videos of any size?
Apple's AirDrop page does not list a size limit. Both devices need Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on and the recipient has to accept. It only reaches people nearby, so use a link when the recipient is somewhere else.
What is the biggest iPhone video I can send with Roceet?
Roceet Free takes up to 2 GB per transfer and Roceet Ultimate takes up to 200 GB per transfer. We haven't verified uploading from a phone browser yet, so a computer is the dependable route.
Can the person I send it to open the video without an account?
Yes. A Roceet link opens on a download page and needs no sign-up. You confirm your own email once with an 8-digit code.
Can I stop a link from lasting forever?
You choose when a Roceet link expires, up to 2 days on Free and 30 days on Ultimate. You can also delete a transfer earlier, and add a password or a download limit.
